Paul Bunyan ist ein angesehener Bürger in einem kleinen Dorf nahe der großen Wälder. Aufgrund seiner ungewöhnlichen Größe - nämlich über das Doppelte eines normalen Menschen - gilt er als einer der besten Holzfäller in der gesamten Gegend. Als er im Streit einen Mann erschlägt, wird er aus dem Dorf verbannt. Zwar fühlt sich Bunyan im Recht, dennoch akzeptiert er das Urteil augenscheinlich. Niemand rechnet damit, dass er aus lauter Rachsucht jedem vorbeikommenden Reisenden auflauern würde, um diesen mit seiner riesigen Axt niederzustrecken. Eines Tages liegt das Dorf verlassen da und die Erinnerung an Paul Bunyan verblasst, bis ihn die meisten nur noch für einen Mythos halten. Wieder andere glauben, dass es ihn wirklich gegeben hat, halten ihn aber inzwischen schon längst für tot. Und dann gibt es jene, für die er nach wie vor quicklebendig und immer noch ein mordendes Monster ist.
